The Integrated Arts Program (IAP) offers enriching arts opportunities for creation through diverse, inclusive programming for students interested in the performing, visual, production, and media arts. Students in the IAP take a combination of Arts Major and Arts Minor courses in grades 9-12.  Extracurricular activities, field trips, and guest clinicians and instructors supplement arts classes. Students who complete at least 8 arts credits including one grade 12 Arts Major and engage with extra-curricular activities throughout high school earn an Arts Endorsement Certificate upon graduation.

Seven Hills Rhode Island (SHRI) is a comprehensive health and human services organization that has been providing a wide range of support to infants, children and their families, adults, and seniors with disabilities and life challenges in Rhode Island for 70 years. Our wide array of healthcare, behavioral health, and community-based supports are holistic, individualized, and person-centered to best empower each individual to pursue the highest degree of personal well-being and independence. Since 2011, SHRI has partnered with Trinity Rep Theatre’s Active Imagination Network (TRAIN) program to develop the IAP performing arts classes. The two organizations work together to increase inclusion in the arts and provide opportunities for adults and children with I/DD to participate in the local arts community. The objectives of the IAP program are to improve developmental skills, increase participants’ involvement in the arts, and achieve social, recreational, creative, and vocational outcomes for our constituents. Through this esteemed partnership, IAP has become a hugely popular and sought-after experience for adults and children with I/DD.

Formerly the Integrated Performing and Visual Arts Program (IPVAP), the program is now called the Integrated Arts Program (IAP) with three avenues for individuals to participate. 1) A group of 20 children, youth, and young adults will attend two 14-week sessions of 90-minute drama classes and rehearsals. Each session culminates in a free public performance at Trinity Repertory Theatre in Providence, advertised among SHRI families, friends, and business partners. 2) A group of 10-12 adult and senior participants from the SHRI day and residential programs will work with SHRI staff in weekly 60-minute sessions for 8 weeks to design sets for the play. The set design begins in the 4th week once the play is chosen. 3) New this year will be a collaboration with Kingston-based music therapy provider Hands in Harmony to create our first-ever musical production. A group of 10-12 adults and children from SHRI day and residential programs will work with Hands in Harmony in 60-minute sessions for 8 weeks.

SHRI’s specialized staff includes health professionals and experts in the field of treating individuals with disabilities across their lifespan. In partnership with the artistic leaders at Trinity Rep, the IAP program utilizes the arts to enhance the quality of life for program participants by creating a therapeutic environment for artistic and personal exploration. The final performance at Trinity Rep Theatre showcases the work of participants and increases the community’s awareness and understanding of the talents and abilities of individuals with disabilities.
