Creative Minds is a collaborative program developed by Seven Hills Family Services (SHFS) and Open Door Arts (ODA), both affiliates of the Seven Hills Foundation, in response to the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission’s call for recreational support programming for people with acquired/traumatic brain injuries.
Creative Minds blends elements of Seven Hills Family Services and Open Door Arts programming to stimulate creativity, increase community integration, and deliver an array of additional benefits for individuals with brain injury through immersive engagement in the arts. Program components include arts and music-based activities, such as art appreciation and creative workshops in collaboration with Worcester Art Museum (WAM) faculty, musical performances and education at local venues, and culturally inspiring community outings. We continually reach out to members of the brain injury community and their providers to connect individuals with these rewarding and therapeutic services and experiences. Participants enhance their creative skills through these diverse offerings and find a supportive community that celebrates their talents.
As a currently qualified vendor of Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission Recreation Services, Seven Hills Family Services is grateful to the MRC Statewide Head Injury Program (SHIP) Recreation Program for its most recent award of $27,852 to continue this vital program for people with acquired/traumatic brain injuries living throughout Central Massachusetts in FY25. We are committed to using these resources to enhance the program's impact and provide exceptional experiences for our participants.
We provide opportunities for participants to be exposed to the full expanse of art history – from antiquity to contemporary art. In partnership with the Worcester Art Museum (WAM), our team provides two-hour workshops each year on the second Saturday of the month, for 10 months each year. The museum, located at 55 Salisbury Street in Worcester, is an ADA-compliant accessible venue and has been a valued partner for Seven Hills Family Services and Open Door Arts, along with many non-profits and community groups across the area, over many years. Caregivers are always welcome and encouraged to participate if desired and/or necessary. By making these programs accessible to all, including caregivers, we create an inclusive environment where creativity and connection can flourish, enhancing the well-being of our people and their support networks.
Creative Minds meets for a monthly casual social art experience for adults with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). Engage with the world of art by creating art through studio experiences led by knowledgeable art instructors. Discuss art throughout history from antiquity to contemporary. No previous art experience is required, and refreshments are included. Other social community events will also take place throughout the year. Please note, to be included as a member, participants need to be at least 18 years or older and have an acquired brain injury. If you need help determining if you are eligible, please contact Noreen Alves at noalvessevenhills.org and include your phone number if you would like us to contact you by phone. Friends, personal care assistants, or other support persons are welcome and required if needed.
