Katherine Martinez is a supervisor for the Home Care (HC) program of Seven Hills’ affiliate, Family Services of Central Massachusetts (FSCM). In June of this year, Katherine will mark her third anniversary in this position, her first at Seven Hills. Home Care is a flexible caregiving option for seniors who wish to age in place—independently in their homes—but need varying levels of assistance to do so. FSCM’s Home Care management hires the aides and based on certain criteria, work with the nursing staff to match the aides to seniors seeking care. Once the caregiving is arranged, it’s time for Katherine to shine in her supervisory role, managing the aides’ schedules as well as their job satisfaction, positive experience, and seniors’ well-being. Having years of experience as an aide herself, Katherine understands the nuances of a successful caregiving arrangement. To ensure that her aides feel supported in every aspect of their responsibilities, Katherine puts herself in their shoes to always guide with empathy and from a place of experience and insight. The shoes got bigger with the pandemic, yet Katherine filled them with effective solutions to challenging situations. She regularly supervises people with varying backgrounds as well as those already working in or entering the health care field. It is not unusual to have a teacher, business owner, or recent graduate join the FSCM HC workforce to supplement their hours or skill base. It brings Katherine her greatest joy when she uses her skills, professionalism, and kindness to the benefit of her team of caregivers. It is just that winning combination that led to Katherine’s nomination and recognition as a Seven Hills Champ.
