Family Services of Central Massachusetts is extremely grateful to the Amelia Peabody Foundation for their recent grant of $45,000 to support the Summer Literacy Initiative (SLI). Since 2010, SLI has prevented thousands of low-income children from experiencing summer reading loss. At-risk children, many of whom are served by SLI, have the greatest chance of falling behind throughout their academic careers when they are unable to achieve reading proficiency by Grades 3 or 4. The SLI coaching model places elementary school teachers as Literacy Coaches in summer program sites to use effective and evidence-based literacy strategies to bring children up to, and sometimes even surpass grade-level reading. Thank you, Amelia Peabody Foundation, for partnering with us to prepare at-risk children for future academic success.
